Examples of alliteration in the poem Beowulf are everywhere, and the adventure movie illustrates them in an awesome and easy to remember way so you don't have far to look. You just need to know what you're looking for! Examples of alliteration in Beowulf are below, but you will learn more if you just take a minute to read what alliteration is - it's so easy!

Beowulf, the literary masterpiece most recently translated by Seamus Heaney, is actually a poem - and an alliterative one at that. Incidences of alliteration can therefore be found sprinkled liberally throughout the text of the story of Beowulf.

To understand the reason for the many examples of alliteration in the poem Beowulf, it is necessary to understand the origin and purpose of this poem. In the days before writing was accessible to the poor, all knowledge, tales and entertainment were spread through the medium of the spoken,or sung, word. This legacy is now known as the 'oral tradition.'

Examples of alliteration in the poem Beowulf

As such,(a narrative poem from the oral tradition) Beowulf is a story, tale, or saga which we today recognise as a poem.

Why is this distinction important? Well, in order to tell such stories, now referred to as epic poems, the tellers had to have very good memories, and like us, they needed a little help now and then - with nemonics or aide-memoires to help them.

This is where the examples of alliteration in the poem Beowulf come in. We all know how easy nursery rhymes are to remember - many of us can recite dozens! There is a school of thought which holds that the brain finds it easier to retain and retell information that has pattern - and that is where alliteration rides to the rescue. Hand in hand with rhyme and rhythm, alliteration is an excellent recall device as well as being poetic in terms of music and sound. There are hundreds of examples of alliteration in Beowulf, there are a few below to start you off.

Alliteration is a writing technique involving repetitive mention of the same ,usually initial, consonant or letter. Sometimes this occurs with syllables too.

EXAMPLES OF ALLITERATION IN THE POEM BEOWULF

A favorite bloodthirsty one is 'dragging the dead men home to his den.' This one also repeats the 'en' sound to create rhyme. Many of Beowulf's alliteration instances are evocative and spooky, such as 'shadow-stalker.' However, this one is tricky for it looks like alliteration on paper, as the written word, but when it is spoken the 's' turns into a 'sh' sound. creating a hissing, whispering scary sound. The adventure movie of Beowulf captures the menace of these moments well.

The beautiful sea image 'showed sea cliffs shining' is another incidence of this mixture. The monster 'stealthy and swift' conjures a picture of some horrible sliding thing, because of the repeat use of the 's' sound. Again, the adventure movie recreates this disgusting image for us, but ancient peoples only had their imaginations!

The 'timbers tremblied' creates a different effect and suggests the likely reaction of warriors faced with such a beast.

Storytelling warriors recounting their brave exploits would have little difficulty in remembering the saga of the battle with such devices to help them. Indeed, the more often the story was told around different hall fires, the better they probably got - especially with some honey mead to oil their tongues and speed the process of 'waxing lyrical' about the great Beowulf. As a revision aid the adventure movie of Beowulf is a great aide-memoire but keep a close eye on the actual text!
